About this work

This is my free-piece project for my AP Art Studio summer assignment, using shades of blue, grays, and yellows to bring to life people’s want for freedom through others.

I wanted to symbolize how people live through others when lacking freedom in their lives, so I chose a bird to show the idea of freedom, blue as both sadness and the sky, and the bright yellow eyes to show the birds separation and own feelings. I also wanted to show the idea of chasing freedom through the girls hair, as it’s flowing, slowly turning into the feathers of the bird in order to truly be free.

To make this piece, I started with finding references on Pinterest of an Osprey, the bird shown, and sketched out an idea with pencil, then using a pastel blue highlighter to block out the hair and body. Then I went in with a dark blue pen for the details in the hair and face, and a black pen for the birds details. I finished with stand out colors, such as orange, purple, and brown on the bird, girl, and feathers to avoid the colors blending together and to add more depth.
